Mass General Department of Emergency Medicine

Emergency Departments have become an important point of care for patients with opioid use disorder. Emergency physicians are required to obtain a DEA X waiver in order to prescribe buprenorphine, an effective treatment for opioid use disorder, yet only 1% of all emergency physicians nationwide have this waiver. To address this challenge, Dr. Alister Martin, a practicing emergency physician at Mass General Hospital, launched Get Waivered, a free remote waiver course to help emergency physicians nationwide obtain a DEA X waiver. As a result of this initiative, 95% of Mass General’s emergency physicians now have their DEA X waiver.
