ATA Conference & Expo 2022

As the only organization completely focused on advancing telehealth, the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) is committed to ensuring that everyone has access to safe, affordable, and appropriate care when and where they need it, enabling the system to do more good for more people. The ATA2022 Conference took place from May 1-3, 2022 in Boston, MA to bring together industry stakeholders, thought leaders, and decision-makers in an engaging and interactive experience. Attendees will discover solutions and technologies, and network with peers to learn how they succeed with telehealth initiatives. Visit the ATA website to learn more.

Earlier this month, the American Telemedicine Association (ATA) held its annual conference in Boston, convening several thousand stakeholders to discuss the future of virtual care. Joe Kvedar, MD, Senior Advisor, MGH Center for Innovation in Digital HealthCare (CIDH), is Chair of the Board of the ATA and delivered the opening keynote at the event. Representing CIDH were Sara Silacci, Chief Strategy Officer & Senior Managing Director, and Molly Macfarlane (née Caffrey), Manager, Strategic Alliance Initiative. Several of our colleagues from the Enterprise also took the stage, including Lee Schwamm, MD; Michael Carter; Juan Estrada, MSc, MBA; Benjamin Meller; Lyndsay Jubelt, MD, MS; Caroline Yang, MD; Aimee Perron, PT, DPT, NCS; and Jane Baldwin, PT, DPT, NCS.

“I think it’s become abundantly clear that quality healthcare does not need to only take place in a hospital or doctor’s office. Many provider-patient interactions can and should be conducted virtually,” said Dr. Kvedar.

I think it’s become abundantly clear that quality healthcare does not need to only take place in a hospital or doctor’s office. Many provider-patient interactions can and should be conducted virtually,” said Dr. Kvedar.

The conference consisted of more than 100 educational sessions and research-based presentations on topics ranging from the latest advances in technology to understanding trends in patient engagement, opportunities to hear from and connect with experts in every area of virtual health, networking opportunities for peer-to-peer discussions to share best practices, demos from exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations, technology applications, and products, and much more!

Dr. Kvedar posed three questions to be contemplated amongst the industry during the conference and going forward: Who will win the battle for primary care? When will we see efficient care models (e.g. asynch, RPM) dominate? And, what is the ‘right’ proportion of telehealth?” said Molly Macfarlane.

As the keynote speaker at ATA2022, Joe Kvedar, MD, focused on pushing the telehealth industry forward and brought to light key issues holding the industry back, namely, how gaining buy-in from doctors will be crucial in establishing a hybrid care delivery system in today’s healthcare environment. In addition, many of the critical challenges that were threatening our healthcare system pre-pandemic–severe provider shortages, an aging population requiring more care, escalating costs, provider burnout–are still looming, and Telehealth and virtual care services are a big part of the solution.

“I enjoyed Dr. Joe Kvedar’s Day 1 talk on the main stage where he reflected on the fact that even though tremendous progress has been made in telehealth the past few years, concerns remain for provider adoption due to reimbursement uncertainties, workflow challenges, and other barriers.
